Drum Recording Session for the Shalaings Album with James Packer

Last week, we added some drums from the Legendary James Packer to the 'Song for Grace'

We used the 'new room' and were pleased by the gentle room ambience.

AKG vintage D90's on the Toms and a Studio spares instrument mic on the floor tom.

AudioTechnica pencil mic on the Hihat.

In Mixing, we decided to gate the Kick and Snare but leave the Toms all open, like a close mic overhead, to increase natural ambience.

Using the advice here:

We avoided high pass filters, and concentrated upon shelving with some 1176 style compressors to catch ambience and some LA style compressors for warmth and colour.

This guy has a great voice and makes it simple to understand the problems of phasing with high-pass.
