Off the Cuff - Friday Performances

Different styles and genres each week to demonstrate the development of Popular Music.

Dan goes first each week, then the students chip in with what they have worked on in the week:


Week 1 - Blind Willie McTell: Broke Down Engine, Pre-War

playing a Dobro with a slide in the open tuning of G. The Classic 30's Blues singer, country Blues.


Week 2 - It’ll be me - Jerry Lee Lewis, 50's

Playing a '57 Strat Issue- Buddy Holly style. Jerry Lee Lewis playing Rock and roll - blues and Country blended around the chords I, IV and V. (I did wash those clothes from last week...!)

Week 3 - Bob Dylan: I'll Keep It with Mine, 60's
The folk troubadour writing pop songs with evocative imagery in the lyrics, simple harmonic structure with finger picking and transitional chords between the I, IV and V. The Students had a crack at Like A Rolling Stone and Be My Baby (The Ronettes/Spector for contrast!)
Week 4 - Masterblaster 70's (I know it was released in 1980, but was recorded in late 70's!)
